| Stay in the ruts! That might sound strange coming from your pastor however, I learned at an early age that ruts can be helpful for the young driver if they are leading in the right direction. They can lead you to your destination and provide comfort and ease of steering or they can lead you into the ditch! The "big hill" in our 1/2 mile long driveway was just that "a big hill." The soil had enough clay to make the road slick and the ruts deep, so one had to be extra cautious when negotiating the "big hill." Every winter a new maze of ruts would form as everyone thought they had a better way to go up or down the hill. The key to success was to find the ruts that would lead to where you wanted to go and stay in that "carved out path" no matter what. One day while going down the hill, I decided I would not pay any attention to those who had gone before me, and carve out my own rut. I was in the "right rut" that led safely to the bottom of the hill, but I thought I could ride up on top of the ruts where no one had been and the ride would be much smoother. Was I in for the ride of my life! I thought I was doing pretty well and took my focus off the road for just an instant (that's all it takes you know) and suddenly I thought the bottom of the car had collapsed under me! Things moved inside that car that hadn't moved in years (including every particle of dust that had gathered under the seat)! I had taken my focus off driving just long enough to fall into the wrong rut and the rut was too deep for the wheels and I hit bottom quickly! It brought my forward progress to a sudden halt, knocked off my muffler and broke my tail pipe! But it could have been worse! The lesson of this story is simple, make the right kinds of ruts and they will lead you safely to your destination. Ruts are formed by continual, constant pressure on the same area of the road, also the mind! Form the right patterns/ruts in your thinking patterns and you can be assured you will have a safe, comfortable ride. Choose the wrong thinking patterns and you will be headed for the ditch. Make the right kind of choices and "stay in the ruts"! Romans 12:2; Philippians 4:8-9; Colossians 3:1-4. |
