As a boy I grew up in the backwoods of McMinn County in the home of my grandmother. Dad and Mom had called it quits with each other and with their three boys. My grandmother took us into her rustic home and began to bring us up in the same manner in which she had her own children. Life was hard in many ways, especially in the era in which I grew up, when almost everyone else I knew had the benefit of modern appliances, conveniences and everyday things we all take for granted these days. Every morning my grandmother would get us out of bed at 5:00 a.m. for a hearty breakfast of eggs, some sort of fried pork, big "cat head" biscuits and all the gravy it took to feed three growing boys. She did this because we had to "get the work done up" before we went to school or in the summer months, before we went to the fields. Many mornings I would awaken before anyone else stirred. Many, many times I would come into the living room (where my grandmother slept and the only room we heated) and hear my grandmother sobbing in the kitchen as she cooked on the old wood cook stove (that now sits in my office at Chilhowee Hills). She would be alone in that kitchen crying out to God for Him to save her boys. While I lived a life of rebellion away from the God who loved me, I never could escape the voice and sobs of my godly grandmother. Her prayers were heard and answered. She never gave up on me and she never gave up on God's ability to deal with her own children and grandchildren!
Do you have loved ones away from God? Is your heart breaking?
Remember Jesus loves you and He loves your children and grandchildren!
