HomeReflectionsGrammy's Teacakes
"... you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession to the praise of His glory." Ephesians 1:13b-14
God has given His Holy Spirit to all His children as a promise or guarantee that we are His, and that everything He said He will do concerning us will surely come to pass. When we are filled with the fullness of God's Spirit, completely under His control, with the joy and peace that comes with that fullness, we have but a 'taste' of what is going to be ours in Heaven forever!
Grammy (my grandmother who reared me) used to bake teacakes. They were a delicious type of sugar cookie that usually didn't last long in our household, in the midst of three hungry boys that didn't get many treats. Often times Grammy would make up the cookie dough, roll it in balls, pat the balls flat, put them on a baking pan, and let them rise a bit before placing them in the old wood cook stove to bake. While she worked her magic with that sweet cookie dough, I would stand and look at her face and with the look only a child can give, and would ask, "could I please get just a little 'taste' of the dough before you put it in the oven to bake?" She would usually look down at me and say, "Boy, you're a case. Here's a little 'taste'. Now that will have to do you for now. Get on about your business."
She would give me a little pinch of that cookie dough and it tasted so sweet! But it also would make me want more, and at times I could hardly keep my mind on anything else, waiting for Grammy's teacakes to finish baking for us all to sit around the table and enjoy. That cookie dough was just a 'taste' -- a promise of the finished product. As much as I loved the cookie dough, it didn't begin to compare to the taste of the cookie when it finished baking!
When we experience the fullness of God's Holy Spirit we are only getting a 'taste' of the finished product -- when all of His family are at His table, enjoying Him forever.
